This is the eighth Atomic Spectrometry Update (ASU) to focus on advances in elemental speciation and covers a period of approximately 12 months from December 2014. This ASU review deals with all aspects of the analytical atomic spectrometry speciation methods developed for: the determination of oxidation states; organometallic compounds; coordination compounds; metal and heteroatom-containing biomolecules, including metalloproteins, proteins, peptides and amino acids; and the use of metal-tagging to facilitate detection via atomic spectrometry. The review does not cover fractionation, which is sometimes termed operationally defined speciation. As with all ASU reviews the focus of the research reviewed includes those methods that incorporate atomic spectrometry as the measurement technique. However, because speciation analysis is inherently focused on the relationship between the metal(loid) atom and the organic moiety it is bound to, or incorporated within, atomic spectrometry alone cannot be the sole analytical approach of interest. For this reason molecular detection techniques are also included where they have provided a complementary approach to speciation analysis. As in previous years, As and Se speciation continues to dominate the current literature and there has also been an increase in the number of publications concerning solid state speciation. This is presumably due to the increase in the number of synchrotron facilities available and a greater awareness of their potential for speciation studies.

The simultaneous extraction of acidic and basic pollutants from water samples is an interesting and debatable work in sample preparation techniques. A novel and efficient method named ion pair based surfactant assisted microextraction (IP-SAME) was applied for extraction and preconcentration of five selected acidic and basic aromatic species as model compounds in water samples, followed by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection. A mixture including 1mL of ultra-pure water (containing ionic surfactant as emulsifier agent) and 60muL 1-octanol (as extraction solvent) was rapidly injected using a syringe into a 10.0mL water sample which formed an emulsified solution. IP-SAME mechanism can be interpreted by two types of molecular mass transfer into the organic solvent (partitioning and ion pairing for non-ionized and ionized compounds, respectively) during emulsification process. The effective parameters on the extraction efficiency such as the extraction solvent type and its volume, type of the surfactant and its concentration, sample pH and ionic strength of the sample were optimized. Under the optimum conditions (60muL of 1-octanol; 1.5mmolL-1 cethyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as emulsifier agent and sample pH 10.0), the preconcentration factors (PFs), detection limits and linear dynamic ranges (LDRs) were obtained in the range of 87-348, 0.07-0.6mugL-1 and 0.1-200mugL-1 respectively. All of natural water samples were successfully analyzed by the proposed method.

Two-dimensional transition-metal carbide materials (termed MXene) have attracted huge attention in the field of electrochemical energy storage due to their excellent electrical conductivity, high volumetric capacity, etc. Herein, with inspiration from the interesting structure of pillared interlayered clays, we attempt to fabricate pillared Ti3C2 MXene (CTAB-Sn(IV)@Ti3C2) via a facile liquid-phase cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) prepillaring and Sn4+ pillaring method. The interlayer spacing of Ti3C2 MXene can be controlled according to the size of the intercalated prepillaring agent (cationic surfactant) and can reach 2.708 nm with 177% increase compared with the original spacing of 0.977 nm, which is currently the maximum value according to our knowledge. Because of the pillar effect, the assembled LIC exhibits a superior energy density of 239.50 Wh kg-1 based on the weight of CTAB-Sn(IV)@Ti3C2 even under higher power density of 10.8 kW kg-1. When CTAB-Sn(IV)@Ti3C2 anode couples with commercial AC cathode, LIC reveals higher energy density and power density compared with conventional MXene materials.

Manipulation of liquid oral drugs by mixing them into foodstuff is a common procedure for taste-masking of OTC pharmaceuticals when administered to children. However, the taste-masking capability of such application media is not systematically evaluated, and recommendations for suitable media are hardly published. In this study, a sensor array of commercially available and self-developed electronic tongue sensors was employed to assess the taste-masking efficiency of eight different beverages (tap water, apple juice, carrot juice, fennel tea, fruit tea, milk, cocoa, and Alete meal to drink) on the OTC pharmaceuticals Ambroxol-ratiopharm, Cetirizin AL, and Laxoberal by multivariate data analysis. The Euclidean distances between each pure application medium and its corresponding drug mixture were used as an indicator for the taste-masking efficiency and correlated to the physico-chemical properties of the beverages. Thus, the pH value, the viscosity, as well as the fat and sugar content of the beverages were included, whereas only the viscosity appeared to be insignificant in all cases. The sugar content as well as the fat content and pH value emerged to be a significant variable in taste-masking efficiency for some of the tested drug products. It was shown that the applied electronic tongue sensors were capable to demonstrate the impact of the physico-chemical properties of the application media on their taste-masking capacity regardless of their non-selectivity towards these characteristics.

A facile preparation of a nanocomposite comprising FePt nanoparticles (NPs) and hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres (HMSNs) was reported. The bimetallic NPs had an alloy structure with Pt-rich cores and were highly dispersed on the mesoporous shell of HMSNs. The material, designated as FePt@MMT-2, could be gradually degraded and dissolved under physiological conditions and showed low cytotoxicity against HeLa cells. FePt@MMT-2 exhibited ferromagnetic-like properties and broadband near-infrared (NIR) absorption along with high photothermal transduction efficiency. In addition, in vitro studies showed high efficacy of FePt@MMT-2 in killing HeLa cells with 1064 nm NIR irradiation, and synergistic anticancer effects when combined with chemo drug topotecan. The results demonstrated the potential of the designed nanocomposite for theranostic applications.

The surfaces of natural beidellite were modified with cationic surfactant octadecyl trimethylammonium bromide at different concentrations. The organo-beidellite adsorbent materials were then used for the removal of atrazine with the goal of investigating the mechanism for the adsorption of organic triazine herbicide from contaminated water. Changes on the surfaces and structure of beidellite were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and BET surface analysis. Kinetics of the adsorption studies were also carried out which show that the adsorption capacity of the organoclays increases with increasing surfactant concentration up until 1.0 CEC surfactant loading, after which the adsorption capacity greatly decreases. TG analysis reveals that although the 2.0 CEC sample has the greatest percentage of surfactant by mass, most of it is present on external sites. The 0.5 CEC sample has the highest proportion of surfactant exchanged into the internal active sites and the 1.0 CEC sample accounts for the highest adsorption capacity. The goodness of fit of the pseudo-second order kinetic confirms that chemical adsorption, rather than physical adsorption, controls the adsorption rate of atrazine.

In the present work, erioglaucine A was applied as internal standard to enhanced spectrophotometric determination of chromium (VI) with diphenylcarbazide. The following procedure was used: (1) addition of internal standard and formation of ion pairs of Cr (VI) with benzyltributylammonium bromide (BTAB) (sample volume 100 ml), (2) extraction to 10 ml of methylene chloride, (3) evaporation in nitrogen stream, and (4) redissolution in a micro-volume with addition of diphenylcarbazide for color development (final volume 200 mul). The preconcentration factor achieved was about 400 and it was shown that, using internal standard, the analytical errors due to sample treatment were reduced. The analytical signals for chromium and internal standard were obtained at 591.30 and 653.50 nm from first derivative spectra, normalized against 1D(653.50nm). The analytical characteristics evaluated were: detection limit = 0.06 mug l-1, quantification limit = 0.19 mug l-1, precision for 1 mug l-1 14.2%, and for 10 mug l-1 3.2%, correlation coefficient of linear regression was 0.9985. The proposed procedure was applied to determination of chromium (VI) in tap water. Total chromium was determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, the recovery of hexavalent chromium added was then evaluated and compared with the results of the proposed procedure. In this experiment, good agreement was obtained between results obtained by the two methods.

Chemistry is an experimental science, COA of Formula: C17H38BrN, and the best way to enjoy it and learn about it is performing experiments.Introducing a new discovery about 1119-97-7, Name is MitMAB

The effect of propylene glycol (PG), its monoalkyl ethers and esters on the micellar behavior of a cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) in aqueous solution was examined by employing electrical conductivity and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique. From conductivity measurements critical micelle concentration (CMC) and degree of counter ion dissociation (alpha) were evaluated. PG and propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGMME) delayed micelle formation while propylene glycol monobutyl ether (PGMBE) propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMMEA) and propylene glycol diacetate (PGDA) favored the process at studied concentrations. SANS data revealed the effect of all these additives for 100 mM TTAB; decrease in micelle size and aggregation number (Nagg) was observed. Results are discussed in terms of effect of additives on water structure and solvent properties and correlated with structure of additives and their octanol-water partition co-efficient values (log Po/w).
