The multifaceted potentialities of expanded pyridiniums (EPs), based on one pyridinium core bearing a 4-pyridyl or 4-pyridylium as the N-pyridinio group, are established at both experimental and theoretical levels. Two classes of head-to-tail (htt) EPs were designed, and their first representative elements were synthesized and fully characterized. The branched (B) family is made up of 2,6-diphenyl-4-aryl-1,4?-bipyridin-1-ium (or 1,1?-diium) species, denoted 1B and 2B for monocationic EPs (with aryl = phenyl and biphenyl, respectively) and 1BMe and 2BMe for related quaternarized dicationic species. The series of fused (F) analogues comprises 9-aryl-benzo[c]benzo[1,2]quinolizino[3,4,5,6-ija][1,6]naphthyridin-15-ium species, denoted 1F and 2F, and their 2,15-diium derivatives referred to as 1FMe and 2FMe. Electrochemistry (in MeCN vs SCE) reveals that branched EPs undergo a single reversible bielectronic reduction at ca. -0.92 V for 1B/2B and -0.59 V for 1BMe/2BMe, whereas pericondensed species show two reversible monoelectronic reductions at ca. -0.83 and -1.59 V for 1F/2F and ca. -0.42 and -1.07 V for 1FMe/2F Me. Regarding electronic absorption features, all htt-EP chromophores show absorptivity in the range of ca. 1-4 × 104 M-1 cm-1, with red-edge absorptions extending toward 450 and 500 nm (in MeCN) for 2BMe and 2FMe, respectively. These lowest-energy pi-pi* transitions are ascribed to intramolecular charge transfer between the electron-releasing biphenyl group and the htt-bipyridinium electron-withdrawing subsystems. EPs display room-temperature photoemission quantum yields ranging from 10% to 50%, with the exception of 1B, and branched luminophores are characterized by larger Stokes shifts (8000-10 000 cm -1) than fused ones. Lastly, a method to predict the efficiency of photobiscyclization of branched EPs into fused ones, based on the analysis of computed difference maps in total electron density for singlet excited states, is proposed.

(Chemical Equation Presented) Cholesterol-armed cyclens worked as octadentate receptors for Na+, Ca2+, and Y3+ complexes in which four chiral cholesterol-functionalized sidearms were bundled and asymmetrically twisted above cyclen-metal complex platforms. Since the resulting helical metal complexes included chiral, hydrophobic cholesterol residues and charged, hydrophilic metal sites as well as asymmetric coordination geometries, they exhibited unique amphiphilic properties and provided chiral self-aggregates in aqueous solutions. Light scattering, fluorescence, and TEM characterizations demonstrated that Na+ complex with cholesterol-armed cyclen gave a particularly stable self-aggregate in aqueous solution and offered supramolecular environments effective for sensing and detection of amino acid anions. Various dansylamino acid derivatives (dansyl = 5-(dimethylamino)-1-naphthalenesulfonyl) were nicely accommodated in the helicate aggregates to give highly enhanced fluorescence signals, which could be detected by the naked eye at 10-7 mol/L level. Their inclusion behaviors were analyzed by a Langmuir-type equation, indicating that enantiomer-selective inclusion occurred. MM/MD calculations and circular dichroism (CD) studies further suggested that cholesterol-armed cyclen helicates have chiral and hydrophobic cavities upon self-aggregation, in which the dansylamino acid anions were specifically accommodated. Since these helicates exhibited nonselective binding abilities in solvent extraction experiments of dansylamino acid anions, uncommon chiral recognition and sensing functions were generated by supramolecular alignments of the chiral metal helicates in the aqueous solutions.

The aminohydroxylation of alkenes provides beta-amino alcohols (vicinal amino alcohols). A number of alkene aminohydroxylation protocols (and those of related reactions termed oxyamination and aminooxygenation), predominantly enabled by transition-metal catalysis, are described in this chapter, which focuses on literature published in the period 1996-2015. Cyclic and acyclic compounds containing vicinal amino alcohols and derivatives thereof can be prepared from alkenes with good regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity.

(Chemical Equation Presented) A catalytic asymmetric Henry reaction has been developed with use of a sulfonyldiamine-CuCl complex as a catalyst. A series of new binaphthyl-containing sulfonyldiamine ligands (2a-h) were readily synthesized in two steps starting from commercially available chiral 1,2-diamines. The (R,R)-diamine-(R)-binaphthyl ligand (2d)-CuCl complex smoothly catalyzed the enantioselective Henry reaction with the assistance of pyridine to give the corresponding adduct with high enantiomeric excess (up to 93%). Moreover, the 2d-CuCl-pyridine system promotes the diastereoselective Henry reaction in syn-selective manner to give the adduct in up to 99% yield with 92:8 synlanti selectivity. The enantiomeric excess of the syn-adduct was 84% ee.

Substance risk assessment and bioassay approach demonstrate effects of combined sewer overflows on sediment toxicity in downstream located transects. The present study investigated the sediment toxicity along 100 m transects downstream from three different combined sewer overflows (CSOs) using a coupled substance risk assessment and bioassay approach. As a first step, a risk assessment according to the consensus based sediment quality guideline was performed to estimate the probability for an incidence of toxicity to benthic organisms in freshwater sediments using their pollutant concentrations of metals, PAHs and PCBs. Secondly, two sediment contact assays (SCAs) using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and embryos of the fish Danio rerio were conducted. Sediments downstream from CSOs were strongly influenced by discharged particles in terms of pollution, due to associated contaminants as well as oxygen depletion caused by oxygen consuming matter. In general, the calculated probability for sediment toxicity corresponded with results of the SCAs. With increasing distance from the CSOs both the toxic potential of the sediments as well as their effects detected in the SCAs decreased. However, clear correlations between concentrations of metals as well as PCBs and toxic effects were found for the nematode SCA. The toxicity assay with embryos of D. rerio was strongly influenced by oxygen depletion in the sediments. Therefore, it was not possible to differentiate between responses mediated by pollution or oxygen depletion using the D. rerio embryo test. The results of the present study demonstrated a clear effect of CSOs on the toxicity of downstream located sediments. As particles were identified as vector for pollutants and as source for oxygen depletion, the retention of particles within the sewer network is of high importance to minimize both stressors. The present study shows that a retention zone located between the CSO and the receiving creek is an efficient measure to enhance sediment and water quality downstream of CSOs.

An operationally simple deaminative borylation reaction of primary alkylamines has been developed. The formation of electron-donor-acceptor complexes between N-alkylpyridinium salts and bis(catecholato)diboron enables photoinduced single-electron transfer and fragmentation to carbon-centered radicals, which are subsequently borylated. The mild conditions allow a diverse range of readily available alkylamines to be efficiently converted into synthetically valuable alkylboronic esters under catalyst-free conditions.

Numerous cinchona organocatalysts with different substituents at their quinuclidine unit have been described and tested, but the effect of those saturation has not been examined before. This work presents the synthesis of four widely used cinchona-based organocatalyst classes (hydroxy, amino, squaramide, and thiourea) with different saturation on the quinuclidine unit (ethyl, vinyl, ethynyl) started from quinine, the most easily available cinchona derivative. Big differences were found in basicity of the quinuclidine unit by measuring the pKa values of twelve catalysts in six solvents. The effect of differences was examined by testing the catalysts in Michael addition reaction of pentane-2,4-dione to trans-beta-nitrostyrene. The 1.6-1.7 pKa deviation in basicity of the quinuclidine unit did not result in significant differences in yields and enantiomeric excesses. Quantum chemical calculations confirmed that the ethyl, ethynyl, and vinyl substituents affect the acid-base properties of the cinchona-thiourea catalysts only slightly, and the most active neutral thione forms are the most stable tautomers in all cases. Due to the fact that cinchonas with differently saturated quinuclidine substituents have similar catalytic activity in asymmetric Michael addition application of quinine-based catalysts is recommended. Its vinyl group allows further modifications, for instance, recycling the catalyst by immobilization.

A diversity-oriented synthetic strategy allowed us to design a series of conjugated molecules containing multiple benzosilole units that can be utilized as efficient hole-blocking materials for phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Some of these compounds showed a performance surpassing that of the current standard, bathocuproine. The new compounds were easily synthesized in a modular fashion from a previously reported 3-stannyl benzosilole building unit. Studies on the properties of these compounds in solution and in the solid state indicate that they possess high electron affinity, high ionization potential, and form stable amorphous films that show high electron-drift mobility. The correlation between their molecular properties and the efficiency of the OLED device performance is also investigated.
