Improving the stability of solar cells using metal-organic frameworks

Although Cu2S-containing chalcogenide solar cells are appealing and cost-effective for photovoltaics (PVs), these materials suffer from rapid performance degradation as a result of the diffusion of copper ions into the CdS layer. In order to prevent this degradation, we report, for the first time, the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as copper sources. MOFs are a unique class of materials for use in solar cells as they can be tailored to have high porosity in combination with a high density of Lewis basic sites incorporated within the framework backbone. These properties allow for post-metalation reactions to be carried out, which can be exploited for use as copper reservoirs. Experimental evidence shows that the Lewis-basic sites of bipyridine moieties can store copper(i) ions and these ions can be used to compensate for the diffused copper ions leading to an improvement in the stability of prepared Cu2-xS/CdS PV cells. This achievement can ultimately lead to the fabrication of low-cost, long-lived Cu-containing PV cells by using MOFs as supporting materials.

Arginine and proline applied as food additives stimulate high freeze tolerance in larvae of Drosophila melanogaster

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is an insect of tropical origin. Its larval stage is evolutionarily adapted for rapid growth and development under warm conditions and shows high sensitivity to cold. In this study, we further developed an optimal acclimation and freezing protocol that significantly improves larval freeze tolerance (an ability to survive at -5C when most of the freezable fraction of water is converted to ice). Using the optimal protocol, freeze survival to adult stage increased from 0.7% to 12.6% in the larvae fed standard diet (agar, sugar, yeast, cornmeal). Next, we fed the larvae diets augmented with 31 different amino compounds, administered in different concentrations, and observed their effects on larval metabolomic composition, viability, rate of development and freeze tolerance. While some diet additives were toxic, others showed positive effects on freeze tolerance. Statistical correlation revealed tight association between high freeze tolerance and high levels of amino compounds involved in arginine and proline metabolism. Proline- and arginine-augmented diets showed the highest potential, improving freeze survival to 42.1% and 50.6%, respectively. Two plausible mechanisms by which high concentrations of proline and arginine might stimulate high freeze tolerance are discussed: (i) proline, probably in combination with trehalose, could reduce partial unfolding of proteins and prevent membrane fusions in the larvae exposed to thermal stress ( prior to freezing) or during freeze dehydration; (ii) both arginine and proline are exceptional among amino compounds in their ability to form supramolecular aggregates which probably bind partially unfolded proteins and inhibit their aggregation under increasing freeze dehydration.

This study addressed the sorption of gasoline, diesel fuel, motor oil and used motor oil by various organo-zeolites. Clinoptilolite from the Sokyrnytsya deposit in Ukraine, zeolite Na-P1 synthesized from fly ash and their modifications with quaternary ammonium salts were used as adsorbents. The adsorption data shows that the materials prepared were effective in sorbing petroleum compounds, and that zeolite Na-P1 was the most efficient in the removal of petrochemicals. The absorbability of gasoline, diesel, engine oil and used engine oil occurs in the following order: Used engine oil > diesel > engine oil > gasoline. This was due to the physicochemical properties of the organic liquids – especially the viscosity and density. Gasoline with the smallest viscosity and density was the least-adsorbed petroleum compound. It has been found that the texture parameters, especially the ratio of mesopores in the zeolite’s structure, determined the sorption properties of the material. Zeolites after the sorption of petroleum compounds can be re-used for the removal of organic liquids after the combustion process. The sorption capacity and texture parameters did not significantly decrease after each cycle of sorption-combustion-sorption. The results show that zeolite Na-P1 synthesized from fly ash is a suitable material to be used in the cleanup of petroleum compound spillages.

Designing antifilarial drug trials using clinical trial simulators

Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis are neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) targeted for elimination by mass (antifilarial) drug administration. These drugs are predominantly active against the microfilarial progeny of adult worms. New drugs or combinations are needed to improve patient therapy and to enhance the effectiveness of interventions in persistent hotspots of transmission. Several therapies and regimens are currently in (pre-)clinical testing. Clinical trial simulators (CTSs) project patient outcomes to inform the design of clinical trials but have not been widely applied to NTDs, where their resource-saving payoffs could be highly beneficial. We demonstrate the utility of CTSs using our individual-based onchocerciasis transmission model (EPIONCHO-IBM) that projects trial outcomes of a hypothetical macrofilaricidal drug. We identify key design decisions that influence the power of clinical trials, including participant eligibility criteria and post-treatment follow-up times for measuring infection indicators. We discuss how CTSs help to inform target product profiles.

Diversity-oriented synthesis towards conceptually new highly modular aminal-pyrrolidine organocatalysts

A study was conducted to demonstrate the synthesis of animal-pyrrolidine derivatives and their applications in various Michael addition reactions. The animal-pyrrolidine organocatalysts were prepared from protected L-prolinal, which was obtained from commercially available Cbz-L-proline. Animal formations with various reoisomers were prepared, while catalysts were synthesized, to study the influence of the different substituents. It was observed that all catalysts were stable after prolonged conservation period. The newly synthesized catalysts were also tested in the reaction of proopinaldehyde with nitrostyrene. It was also observed that all the catalysts lead to full conversion after a short reaction time. The enantioselectivity varied from 49% in diastereoisomeric catalyst, to the best enantioselectivity of 79%, using reoisomer catalysts.
