We herein report on palladium(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative Heck arylations of linear electron-rich olefins with excellent selectivity for the internal position. The method allows a variety of electron-rich linear olefins to undergo arylation with ortho-functionalized aromatic carboxylic acids, including heterocycles. The reaction mechanism has been explored with ESI-MS studies to confirm previous findings, and to reveal the formation of a highly stable palladium complex as a result of the Heck product reacting with the catalyst.

Organocatalytic asymmetric hydrolysis of epoxides

The hydrolytic ring opening of epoxides is an important biosynthetic transformation and is also applied industrially. We report the first organocatalytic variant of this reaction, exploiting our recently discovered activation of carboxylic acids with chiral phosphoric acids via heterodimerization. The methodology mimics the enzymatic mechanism, which involves an enzyme-bound carboxylate nucleophile. A newly designed phosphoric acid catalyst displays high stereocontrol in the desymmetrization of meso-epoxides. The methodology shows wide generality with cyclic, acylic, aromatic, and aliphatic substrates. We also apply our method in the first highly enantioselective anti-dihydroxylation of simple olefins.

On the mechanism of activation of copper-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization

The mechanism of activation of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been analyzed by investigating the kinetics of dissociative electron transfer (ET) to alkyl halides (RX) in acetonitrile. Using a series of alkyl halides, including both bromides and chlorides, the rate constants of ET (k ET) to RX by electrogenerated aromatic radical anions (A-) acting as outer-sphere donors have been measured and analyzed according to the current theories of dissociative ET. This has shown that the kinetic data fit very well the “sticky” dissociative ET model with the formation of a weak adduct held together by electrostatic interactions. The rate constants of activation, kact, of some alkyl halides, namely chloroacetonitrile, methyl 2-bromopropionate and ethyl chloroacetate, by [CuIL] + (L = tris(2-dimethylaminoethyl)amine, tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, 1,1,4,7,7-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine) have also been measured in the same experimental conditions. Comparisons of the measured kact values with those predicted assuming an outer-sphere ET for the complexes have shown that activation by Cu(I) is 7-10 orders of magnitude faster than required by outer-sphere ET. Therefore, the mechanism of RX activation by Cu(I) complexes used as catalysts in ATRP occurs by an inner-sphere ET or more appropriately by a halogen atom abstraction.

The iron mixed-valence complex (n-C3H7)4N[FeIIFeIII(dto)3] (dto = C2O2S2) exhibits a novel type of phase transition according electron transfer between FeII and FeIII called charge transfer phase transition (CTPT). The existence of the CTPT highly depends on the 3d metal substitution with Zn, Mn, Cr, or Co for corresponding Fe site in (n-C3H7)4N[FeIIFeIII(dto)3]. Here, we prepared a series of magnetically diluted complexes (n-C3H7)4N[FeIIFeIII1?xVIIIx(dto)3] (x = 0?1), and carried out investigation of magnetic properties. Judging from the magnetic susceptibility measurement, there is no suppression of the CTPT unlike other 3d metal substituted cases. Moreover, 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy revealed that about 60% of FeII sites changed their spin states from high spin to low spin in case of substitution rate for x = 1.00. Since the difference of hardness and softness between metallic ions (FeII, FeIII and VIII) and coordination sites of ligand (O or S in dto), this behavior is explained by the linkage isomerization of bridging ligand in formation process of the complex.

A multisyringe sequential injection method for monitoring water in the energy cogeneration system of a municipal waste incinerator

Leading-edge urban solid waste ashing plants use burning heat energy to obtain electrical power. Water fed to their boilers for conversion into steam should be highly pure in order to minimize corrosion, scaling and similar phenomena, which can lead to malfunctioning and a reduced useful life but can be avoided by proper management and control of the water supply. In this work, we developed a multiparameter monitor based on multisyringe sequential injection for the sequential determination of up to eight important parameters, namely: pH, specific and acid conductivity, hydrazine, ammonium, phosphate, silicate and total iron. Acid conductivity was determined by passing the sample through a cation-exchange resin in order to retain ammonium ion and release protons. This parameter was deemed the most accurate indicator of dissolved solids in boiler water. Chemical parameters were determined spectrophotometrically: hydrazine by reaction with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, ammonium by the modified Berthelot reaction, iron with o-phenanthroline, and phosphate and silica by formation of a molybdoheteropoly blue dye in the presence of ascorbic acid as reductant. Use of the optimum chemical and physical operating conditions provided 3sblank detection limits of 0.01 mg l-1 N2H4, 0.13 mg l-1 NH4+, 0.04 mg l-1 Fe, 0.03 mg l-1 SiO2 and 0.05 mg l-1 PO43-, and relative standard deviations not greater than 2.5%. The methods integrated in the proposed monitor were successfully applied to real samples from the water-steam cycle at the Son Reus ashing plant in Palma de Mallorca (Spain).

Improving the stability of solar cells using metal-organic frameworks

Although Cu2S-containing chalcogenide solar cells are appealing and cost-effective for photovoltaics (PVs), these materials suffer from rapid performance degradation as a result of the diffusion of copper ions into the CdS layer. In order to prevent this degradation, we report, for the first time, the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as copper sources. MOFs are a unique class of materials for use in solar cells as they can be tailored to have high porosity in combination with a high density of Lewis basic sites incorporated within the framework backbone. These properties allow for post-metalation reactions to be carried out, which can be exploited for use as copper reservoirs. Experimental evidence shows that the Lewis-basic sites of bipyridine moieties can store copper(i) ions and these ions can be used to compensate for the diffused copper ions leading to an improvement in the stability of prepared Cu2-xS/CdS PV cells. This achievement can ultimately lead to the fabrication of low-cost, long-lived Cu-containing PV cells by using MOFs as supporting materials.
