Recent Progress of Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthesis and Battery Applications

As one type of promising inorganic-organic hybrid crystal material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted widespread attention in many potential fields, particularly in energy storage and conversion. Recently, effective strategies have been developed to construct uniform nanoscale MOFs (NMOFs), which not only retain inherent advantages of MOFs but also develop some improved superiorities, including shorter diffusion pathway for guest transportation and more accessible active sites for surface adsorption and reaction. Additonally, their nanometer size provides more opportunity for post-functionalization and hybridization. In this review, recent progress on the preparation of NMOFs is summarized, primarily through bottom-up strategies including reaction parameter- and coordination-assisted synthesis, and top-down strategies such as liquid exfoliation and salt-template confinement. Additionally, recent applications of NMOFs in batteries as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes is discussed. Finally, some important issues concerning the fabrication and application are emphasized, which should be paid attention in future.

Unraveling the catalytic mechanisms of H-2 production with thiosemicarbazone nickel complexes

Thiosemicarbazone-based complexes have been explored as a new class of redox-active catalysts H-2 production due to their flexibility for extensive optimization. To rationalize the process, we need to understand how these complexes function. In this work, we used DFT calculations to investigate the various mechanisms that could take place for three previously characterized Ni complexes. We found that two possible mechanisms are compatible with previously published experimental data, involving protonation of two adjacent N atoms close to the metal center. The first step likely involves a proton-coupled electron transfer process from a proton source to one of the distal N atoms in the ligand. From here, a second proton can be transferred either to the coordinating N atom situated in between the first protonated atom and the Ni atom, or to the second distal N atom. The former case then has the protons in close distance for H-2 production. However, the latter will require a third protonation event to occur, which would fall in one of the N atoms adjacent to the Ni center, resulting in a similar mechanism. Finally, we show that the H-H bond formation is the rate-limiting step, and suggest additional strategies that can be taken into account to further optimize these complexes.

Co- and N-doped carbon nanotubes with hierarchical pores derived from metal-organic nanotubes for oxygen reduction reaction

Biomolecules with a broad range of structure and heteroatom-containing groups offer a great opportunity for rational design of promising electrocatalysts via versatile chemistry. In this study, uniform folic acid-Co nanotubes (FA-Co NTs) were hydrothermally prepared as sacrificial templates for highly porous Co and N co-doped carbon nanotubes (Co-N/CNTs) with well-controlled size and morphology. The formation mechanism of FA-Co NTs was investigated and FA-Co-hydrazine coordination interaction together with the H-bond interaction between FA molecules was characterized to be the driving force for growth of one-dimensional nanotubes. Such distinct metal-ligand interaction afforded the resultant CNTs rich Co-Nx sites, hierarchically porous structure and Co nanoparticle-embedded conductive network, thus an overall good electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction. Electrochemical tests showed that Co-N/ CNTs-900 promoted an efficient 4e ORR process with an onset potential of 0.908 V vs. RHE, a limiting current density of 5.66 mA cm(-2) at 0.6 V and a H2O2 yield lower than 5%, comparable to that of 20% Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the catalyst revealed very high stability upon continuous operation and remarkable tolerance to methanol. Dehydrogenative amide synthesis from alcohols and amines utilizing N-heterocyclic carbene-based ruthenium complexes as efficient catalysts: The influence of catalyst loadings, ancillary and added ligands

The metal-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and amines to access amides has been recognized as an atom-economic and environmental-friendly process. Apart from the formation of the amide products, three other kinds of compounds (esters, imines and amines) may also be produced. Therefore, it is of vital importance to investigate product distribution in this transformation. Herein, N-heterocyclic carbene-based Ru (NHC/Ru) complexes [Ru-1]-[Ru-5] with different ancillary ligands were prepared and characterized. Based on these complexes, we selected condition A (without an added NHC precursor) and condition B (with an added NHC precursor) to comprehensively explore the selectivity and yield of the desired amides. After careful evaluation of various parameters, the Ru loadings, added NHC precursors and the electronic/steric properties of ancillary NHC ligands were found to have considerable influence on this catalytic process. Enantioselective Intermolecular Radical C-H Amination

Radical reactions hold a number of inherent advantages in organic synthesis that may potentially impact the planning and practice for construction of organic molecules. However, the control of enantioselectivity in radical processes remains one of the longstanding challenges. While significant advances have recently been achieved in intramolecular radical reactions, the governing of asymmetric induction in intermolecular radical reactions still poses challenging issues. We herein report a catalytic approach that is highly effective for controlling enantioselectivity as well as reactivity of the intermolecular radical C-H amination of carboxylic acid esters with organic azides via Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysis (MRC). The key to the success lies in the catalyst development to maximize noncovalent attractive interactions through fine-tuning of the remote substituents of the D-2 symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin ligand. This noncovalent interaction strategy presents a solution that may be generally applicable in controlling reactivity and enantioselectivity in intermolecular radical reactions. The Co(II)-catalyzed intermolecular C-H amination, which operates under mild conditions with the C-H substrate as the limiting reagent, exhibits a broad substrate scope with high chemoselectivity, providing effective access to valuable chiral amino acid derivatives with high enantioselectivities. Systematic mechanistic studies shed light into the working details of the underlying stepwise radical pathway for the Co(II)-based C-H amination.

Partial leaching effect to Pt decorated Pd-Fe/C nanoparticles for oxygen reduction reaction

A facile route to produce high-performance Pt@Pd-Fe/C oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are explained in this article. The surface modification of partial leaching of Fe from Pd-Fe nanoparticles followed by Pt decoration using microwave-assisted method has largely enhanced the catalytic performances. Herein, we show that alloying Pd with Fe atoms improves the catalytic activity toward ORR by expending lattices to tune the strain and ligand effect. Further modification by partially leaching Fe atoms from the core surface can increase the active sites, the trace amounts of Pt decorated on the modified Pd-Fe cores improved the ORR activity and stability by controlling the strain effect and ligand effect between Pt, Fe and Pd. Such a special designed structure interacts to give further improved the ORR catalytic performances which is higher than commercial Johnson Matthey Pt/C catalysts, and shed a light of mass production low-cost catalyst.

Synthesis and characterization of chitosan pyridyl imine palladium (CPIP) complex as green catalyst for organic transformations

In this work, the modification of chitosan using 2-acetyl pyridine has been used to prepare an intermediate, chitosan pyridyl imine (CPI), in first step and then in second step it is further reacted with Pd(OAc)(2) to develop chitosan pyridyl imine palladium (CPIP) complex catalyst in a very simplistic way. The formed CPIP has been extensively characterized with respect to raw chitosan utilizing methods including FT-IR, pyrolysis GC-MS, XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, EDS, TGA-DTG and DSC. TG-DSC study suggested that the catalyst is thermally stable up to 300 degrees C. This catalyst shows an excellent activity in the reduction of toxic pollutant nitrobenzene to less toxic aniline. CPIP complex has also been found to give magnificent results in Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck cross-coupling reactions, and therefore, using this green catalyst, the toxic phosphine ligand can be excluded from cross-coupling reactions. This study furnishes an economic and eco-friendly catalyst for organic transformation in sustainable chemistry.
