Phase transfer catalysis: Effect of cationic surfactants on the free radical polymerization of methylmethacrylate

The effect of cationic surfactants, decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DDTAB) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTAB), has been studied as phase transfer catalysts (PTCs) on the free radical polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA) using potassium peroxydisulfate (PDS, K2S2O8) in toluene-water biphase system. Of the three PTCs in their respective critical micellar concentration (CMC) and in common concentration, the TDTAB show comparatively high rate of polymerization (Rp), 7.76 ¡Á 10-5 mol.L-1.S-1, at the lowest reaction time of 30 min in its concentration of 2 ¡Á 10-2 mol.L-1. Detailed kinetic study of polymerization of MMA has been carried out using TDTAB at a fixed time of 30 min by varying [MMA], [K2S2O8], [TDTAB] and temperature. Based on the kinetic results, the free energy of activation has been calculated, and a suitable mechanism and rate law has been proposed.

Kinetics of the diazotization and azo coupling reactions of procaine in the micellar media

The kinetics of the diazotization reaction of procaine in the presence of anionic micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic micelles of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DDTAB) and tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TDTAB) were carried out spectrophotometrically at lambdamax=289nm. The values of the pseudo first order rate constant were found to be linearly dependent upon the [NaNO2] in the concentration range of 1.0¡Á10-3moldm-3 to 12.0¡Á10-3moldm-3 in the presence of 2.0¡Á10-2moldm-3 acetic acid. The concentration of procaine was kept constant at 6.50¡Á10-5moldm-3. The addition of the cationic surfactants increased the reaction rate and gave plateau like curve. The addition of SDS micelles to the reactants initially increased the rate of reaction and gave maximum like curve. The maximum value of the rate constant was found to be 9.44¡Á10-3s-1 at 2.00¡Á10-3moldm-3 SDS concentration. The azo coupling of diazonium ion with beta-naphthol (at lambdamax=488) nm was found to linearly dependent upon [ProcN2+] in the presence of both the cationic micelles (CTAB, DDTAB and TDTAB) and anionic micelles (SDS). Both the cationic and anionic micelles inhibited the rate of reactions. The kinetic results in the presence of micelles are explained using the Berezin pseudophase model. This model was also used to determine the kinetic parameters e.g. km, Ks from the observed results of the variation of rate constant at different [surfactants].

Development and applications of an inexpensive and modular medium-throughput microcrystalliser for the preparation and characterisation of solid phases

Identification, isolation, and control of solid form are important for process and product control of specialty chemicals and pharmaceutical compounds. Solid forms are commonly isolated by crystallisation from solution and as a consequence acquisition of both phase equilibrium and kinetic information is vital. In these cases, control of solid form requires a complete assessment of the relationship between crystallisation conditions and both structural and physical aspects of solid form through a number of experiments which may run into many hundreds for complex systems. Traditionally such experiments have been completed sequentially. To fully characterise complex systems in this manner often takes years and so to accelerate this process and characterise a wider phase space, tools for studying multiple samples have been developed to increase throughput. These high-throughput synthetic and analytical techniques are often prohibitively expensive for smaller-scale research laboratories. As a solution to this problem, we have developed a low cost (<4000 GBP) and modular medium-throughput microcrystalliser and optical tomography system for acquisition of phase equilibria, crystallisation kinetic, and solid-form data on organic materials. The design and typical applications of this equipment are presented here. Application of capillary electrophoretic methods for the analysis of plant phloem and xylem saps composition: A review

Plant vascular tissue is essential for the exchange of water, nutrients, metabolic products, and signals among distant organs in cormophytes. The compositions of phloem and xylem saps are highly dependent on many internal and external factors, and thus their analysis provides a valuable insight into plant physiology, growth, and development as well as nutrition status or presence of biotic or abiotic stresses. Capillary electrophoresis characterized by highly efficient separations and minuscule sample requirements represents a suitable analytical technique for this purpose because the sap constitutes a complex mixture with generally minimal availability. This review aims at providing a comprehensive overview of published capillary electrophoretic methods for the analysis of primary components present in the phloem and xylem saps of higher plants.

Endocytosis, trafficking and exocytosis of intact full-length botulinum neurotoxin type a in cultured rat neurons

Botulinum toxin A (BoNT/A) is a potent neurotoxin that acts primarily by silencing synaptic transmission by blocking neurotransmitter release. BoNT/A comprises a light chain (LC/A) intracellular protease and a heavy chain (HC/A) composed of a receptor binding domain (HCC/A) and a translocation domain (HCN/A) that mediates cell entry. Following entry into the neuron, the disulphide bond linking the two peptide chains is reduced to release the LC/A. To gain better insight into the trafficking and fate of BoNT/A before dissociation we have used a catalytically inactive, non-toxic full-length BoNT/A(0) mutant. Our data confirm that BoNT/A(0) enters cortical neurons both in an activity-dependent manner and via a pathway dependent on fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (Fgfr3) signalling. We demonstrate that both dynamin-dependent endocytosis and lipid rafts are involved in BoNT/A internalisation and that full-length BoNT/A(0) traffics to early endosomes. Furthermore, while a proportion of BoNT/A remains stable in neurons for 3 days, BoNT/A degradation is primarily mediated by the proteasome. Finally, we demonstrate that a fraction of the endocytosed full-length BoNT/A(0) is capable of exiting the cell to intoxicate other neurons. Together, our data shed new light on the entry routes, trafficking and degradation of BoNT/A, and confirm that trafficking properties previously described for the isolated HCC/A receptor binding domain of are also applicable to the intact, full-length toxin.

Line tension of alkane lenses on aqueous surfactant solutions at phase transitions of coexisting interfaces

Alkane droplets on aqueous solutions of surfactants exhibit a first-order wetting transition as the concentration of surfactant is increased. The low-concentration or “partial wetting” state corresponds to an oil lens in equilibrium with a two-dimensional dilute gas of oil and surfactant molecules. The high-concentration or “pseudo-partial wetting” state consists of an oil lens in equilibrium with a mixed monolayer of surfactant and oil. Depending on the combination of surfactant and oil, these mixed monolayers undergo a thermal phase transition upon cooling, either to a frozen mixed monolayer or to an unusual bilayer structure in which the upper leaflet is a solid layer of pure alkane with hexagonal packing and upright chains while the lower leaflet remains a disordered liquid-like mixed monolayer. Additionally, certain long-chain alkanes exhibit a surface freezing transition at the air-oil interface where the top monolayer of oil freezes above its melting point. In this review, we summarize our previous studies and discuss how these wetting and surface freezing transitions influence the line tension of oil lenses from both an experimental and theoretical perspective.
