The anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity to methanogenic gas production of different alkyl chain length homologs of quaternary ammonium based surfactants were examinated. In this study, the gemini surfactants of the alkanediyl-alpha-omega- bis(alkyl dimethyl ammonium) dibromide type, on the one hand, with different alkyl groups containing m carbon atoms and an ethanediyl spacer, referred to as ”m-2-m” (m = 10, 12 and 16) and, on the other hand, with n-C16 alkyl groups and different spacers containing s carbon atoms, referred to as ”16-s-16” (s = 2, 6, 10 and Ar (8)) have been synthesized, purified and characterized. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), micelle ionization degree (alpha) and Gibbs free energy of micellization (DeltaGmic) of these surfactants and the monomeric cationic surfactants DTAB and CTAB have been determined by means of electric conductivity measurements. In addition, the temperature dependence of the CMC was determined for the 10-2-10 gemini surfactant. The CMCs of the gemini surfactants are found to be much lower than those of the corresponding monomeric surfactants and the effect of the hydrophobic alkyl chain length is more important than that of the spacer. The CMC of 16-s-16 passes through a maximum of (or around) s = 6 and then decreases for s = 10. The presence of a maximum CMC is explained by the contribution of a change of conformation of the surfactant with increasing spacer chain length. The changes of a with s and m are found qualitatively similar to those found for CMC values. The values of DeltaGmic are more negative for the dimers than for the monomers and also change with an increasing spacer carbon number, as CMC values do. The thermodynamic parameters of micellization indicate that the micellization of 10-2-10 is enthalpy driven. AOCS 2011.

Feasibility of implementing a DEC-fortified (DEC at 0.2% w/w and iodine) salt strategy to hasten elimination of diurnally sub-periodic Wuchereria bancrofti (DspWB) from the lone foci in Nancowry islands, Nicobar district, India, was assessed. A total of 21 metric tonnes of free-flow DEC salt manufactured by Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation, India, was distributed for 1 year. In the DEC-salt+MDA-arm, > 90% of the households received and used the DEC salt. DEC was within therapeutic range (0.2?0.32% w/w) in the samples collected from kitchens. The low stability of molecular complexes in acids limits their industrial exploitation as anodes in water-splitting devices, where high current densities and proton conductivity are required. Herein, an existing Co(1,10-phenanthroline)2 complex film is engineered to improve its pH-stability via extra OH substituents on the ligand, i.e. 1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-diol. This novel Co(1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-diol)2 complex film is active for water oxidation at low overpotentials and stable at low pH. Since the calculated water oxidation overpotentials of both complexes are similar, the difference in water oxidation activity is attributed to a smaller charge transfer resistance, which originates from a different anchoring style to the electrode via the OH groups of the ligand. This result is supported by electrochemical impedance measurements. The high pH-stability of the Co(1,10-phenanthroline-4,7-diol)2 film is computationally rationalized by a high crystal formation energy observed in DFT calculations. In summary, an acid-stable and active cobalt-based metal-organic film is reported that competes well with most reported earth-abundant catalysts for water oxidation under similar conditions.

The synthesis of TS-1 zeolite with controllable crystal sizes has been successfully scaled up by using the suspension of nanosized S-1 as seed in a TPABr-template hydrothermal system. Even under poor stirring condition, the suspended seeds can be easily dispersed in the mixture of zeolite precursor. Therefore the synthesis shows a very good reproducibility when scaled up from 2 L to 500 L, and the crystal size of TS-1 zeolite can be exactly controlled and changed in a wide range by only changing seed amount. Using this TS-1 zeolite through large-scale synthesis as material, the catalyst was prepared by modification and used in propylene epoxidation. The yield of propylene oxide based on H2O2and propylene reaches 96.5% and 64.3%, respectively, which is superior to that of nanosized TS-1. Though the TS-1 samples synthesized with dried nanosized S-1 seed are similar to the samples synthesized with suspended seeds on the lab scale, the synthesis process using dried seeds shows a low reproducibility on the large scale. This research also implies the low cost and high energy efficiency of the production of TS-1 by using suspended seeds in large-scale process.
